Kellogg Evening MBA : Part-Time Application 2015-2016

If you’re dreaming about Kellogg, you’re dreaming big.

The highly ranked Kellogg evening MBA and weekend MBA programs will provide an academic experience on par with that of full-time MBA students.

The admissions team knows how difficult it is to present yourself in writing, so all applicants can schedule an interview as part of the application. There’s no screening done prior to the interview phase which gives you the chance to put your best foot forward.

Essay 1: Resilience. Perseverance. Grit. Call it what you will… Challenges can build character. Describe a challenging experience you’ve had. How were you tested? What did you learn? (450 words)

Essay tips: This is a great question, and I have helped my students write beautiful essays in response. You’ll get to tell a story about a wise hero, and that hero is you. Pick something truly challenging. Make sure it’s something meaningful and original – how you worked long hours, or came up with a super-smart algorithm to solve a problem. Ninety-nine percent of MBA applicants are ambitious, hard-working individuals.  What sets you apart? Figure out what is at the core of your story. Is it about your expectation of managing someone? Your ability to prevent conflict? Is it about growing up at a socioeconomic disadvantage and finding your way out? Is it about confronting bullies? Re-taking a big exam? Regardless of your history, there are so many good options. Even if your life has been pretty smooth sailing so far, you can find something. And I can help.

Essay 2: Leadership requires an ability to collaborate with and motivate others. Describe a professional experience that required you to influence people. What did this experience teach you about working with others, and how will it make you a better leader? (450 words)

Essay tips: Last year, I worked with a student who wanted to write about how he managed one challenging meeting with a new client really well. He was very proud of how he built trust immediately and convinced the client to follow this advice. Although his story was sweet, it wasn’t an AMAZING experience that would impress the Kellogg MBA admissions team and convince them they’d found the perfect candidate for their part-time program. Instead we used another story, about working with an under-qualified and uncertain client team over a period of months. The new story was more interesting; it demonstrated the growth of my student and also of the team he was working with. It also had a happy ending, making the reader, Kellogg admissions team, feel confident about my student’s ability to connect with people and make the best use of his own communication style.
