I like new MBA essay questions, especially when they are not the common “challenge,” “leadership,” or “failure” ones that many top MBA programs like to include on their applications. Let’s take a look at the new inspiration / role model question that London Business School has as its last (but not least)….
Question 6 (300 words) : Give an example of a person who, in your opinion, has made a profound impact on the way the world does business. How will this person influence your contribution to your MBA Programme at London Business School?
“Tell me about a role model in your life” is one of my favorite MBA interview questions. While the common answer is often one’s parents, with second place a tie between Mahatma Gandhi and Steve Jobs, this question has great potential, but it’s also overwhelming.
London Business School has limited the scope of the question by asking you to think about a leader who has had an impact on the way the world does business. While it’s easy to create a list of business leaders, the difficult part in this question is to figure out how to connect this to your contribution to the London Business School program and community. Try going beyond the usual suspects–people who invented recent technologies (internet, search, social networking)–and dig deeper.
