HEC MBA Application Essays for 2013-2014
HEC Paris Essay 1. Why are you applying to the HEC MBA Program now? What is the professional objective that will guide your career choice after your MBA, and how will the HEC MBA contribute to the achievement of this objective? (500 words)
Analysis: HEC are looking to hear about your career goals and how the school is going to help you progress towards that goal. Identify the critical skills that you need for your target function and industry post-graduation (negotiation, international business, managing large teams, etc.), and match them with classes and activities atHEC that will help you in these areas.
HEC Paris Essay 2. What do you consider your most significant life achievement? (250 words)
Analysis: HEC are asking for just one achievement, so it could be personal or professional, something from the last three years or from your childhood. The emphasis in this essay is should not be just on the accomplishment itself, but on what it says about your personality, ability to handle difficulties, values and behavior.
HEC Paris Essay 3. Leadership and ethics are inevitably intertwined in the business world. Describe a situation in which you have dealt with these issues and how they have influenced you. (250 words)
Analysis: HEC has phrased this question in a somewhat confusing way, but essentially what they are asking about is ethics – how you manage difficult ethical situations and how you have learned and developed from them. You need to pick an interesting story, something substantial, a story that will highlight your decision-making process and ethical standards.
HEC Paris Essay 4. Imagine a life entirely different from the one you now lead, what would it be? (250 words)
Analysis: I love this question; feel free to be creative and talk about something else you would have loved to become – whether it’sa professional painter, an architect, a jazz pianist or a marathon runner. Don’t be shy–talk about the things you love and enjoy.
HEC Paris Essay 5. Please choose from one of the following essays: (250 words)
A. What monument or site would you advise a first-time visitor to your country or city to discover, and why?
B. Certain books, movies or plays have had an international success that you believe to be undeserved. Choose an example and analyze it.
C. What figure do you most admire and why? You may choose from any field (arts, literature, politics, business, etc).
Analysis: This essay isn’t so much about your selection – you can pick a book that’s famous in your country (or globally), talk about the Eiffel Tower or a small shrine – it’s all about what you say. HEC MBA admissions want to see the thinking behind your decision, and how you explain your decision to an outsider. Don’t be tempted to pick a famous place or personality – select a topic that you are familiar with and can talk about intelligently.
