Here’s my analysis of SMU MBA Application for 2013-2014. Enjoy!
Southern Methodist University MBA Application – Cox School of Business
What has led you to pursue a graduate business degree? Please identify your short- and long-term career objectives, an explanation of your decision to pursue this degree at this point in your life and your specific interest in the Cox School of Business. (500 word limit)
Analysis: The first essay in COX MBA application has multiple parts, and you want to address all of them in your essays: 1) why MBA; 2) your short- and long-term goals; 3)why pursue an MBA now; 4) why Cox. You don’t need to answer each part in a separate paragraph; a better structure would be to combine them into an essay that flows and addresses all these topics.
Talking about “Why now” is a sensitive issue, and applicants who talk about reaching a plateau in their career or being unable to be promoted without an MBA from Cox will not come across as successful candidates; talk about why you are ready to go back to school, what you have learned, or what challenges on your plate require you to pursue an MBA from Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University.
2A. The Cox School of Business seeks students who desire to become leaders with purpose – those who will positively influence the global business community, whether in a small way or on a large scale. What have you done thus far in your career to make a difference? (500 word limit)
Analysis: you don’t need to have saved the rainforest in Brazil or cured cancel to write an impressive and meaningful essay for the second question of the Cox MBA application; you just want to convince the reader that you care about having a positive impact. The best way to do so is to show what you have already achieved. If you haven’t done any community work in your life, this is going to be a difficult task, but a good solution would be to talk about the impact you have had on your organization, college, and even friends and family.
